My story
I didn’t pick freight because it was easy. I stayed because of the people. Brokering at Callahan Transportation here in Kansas City means my phone never stops. It’s calls, texts and emails from sunup to long after dark. Somewhere in all that noise, the drivers on the other end became my people.
Most days it’s steel, lumber and the oversize loads nobody else wants to touch. Culvert pipe as wide as a lane, coils that need chains just right, lumber that has to be strapped tight before the first mile. Every one comes with its own puzzle: an appointment that moved, a dock that’s backed up, a tarp that has to go on in the wind. My job is to solve the puzzle before it ever lands on my driver’s shoulders.
What I’m proudest of isn’t the miles. It’s the trust. When a driver picks up my call, they know I’ll be straight with them, I’ll have their back when something goes sideways, and I’ll still be picking up the phone when they’re rolling at midnight. Plenty of them started as a voice on the line and turned into some of my best friends.
